The role of citizens in building the “National Vegetation Exemplary City”: all citizens willingly joined the bid for the National Vegetation Exemplary City.

Every year during the Chinese Tree-planting Festival, over one million citizens voluntarily join the event which has gradually formed three distinctive forest areas, the Youth, the Couples and the Civil Servant’s areas. In 2005 alone, volunteers planted over 3’120.000 trees which are from then on managed by the Forest Bureau and the Vegetation Administration Department.

The role of citizens in building the “National Sanitation City”: over the last 20 years, the city relentlessly strives to live up to the National Sanitation City award. From the mayor to the common people, everyone regularly takes to the streets to join the city cleaning action. Commercial shops have the responsibility for the sanitary conditions of their shops and the surrounding areas; citizens follow the “Three in-orders” checklist which states that traffic, public space civility and clean environment should all be in order.

The role of citizens in building the “National Environment Protection Exemplary City”: the government promotes environmental awareness as the passage to obtain this award. The Urban Core and the 28 town clusters have environment protection NGO’s with more than 80,000 volunteers; additionally, the city created a public environment protection website; during the World Environment Day, the city releases a news bulleting to announce and promote innovative environment protection measures; the government created the “Green Schools” and the “Green Communities” programs to organize events that integrate schools, communities, enterprises and families and popularize environment protection knowledge.

Currently, the city has 3 ecology exemplary villages and 2 ecology exemplary zones at provincial level as well as 10 green communities.
