By the end of 2005, Dongguan had finished 34 household sewage water treatment projects with a daily treatment capacity of 3 million tons. A small part of the sludge is re-used in gardening as fertilizer and most of it is buried in landfills after burning for detoxifying.

Rain and sewage water are separated throughout the city. The industrial sewage water discharge complies 100% with the environment protection standards.

The city has dredged up a total of 195 kilometers in 61 waterways and restored 55.9 kilometers of the banks. Livestock farms which did not meet the sewage water treatment standard were closed down, considerably reducing pollution.

To avoid the pollution of the city's potable water resource, the government has designated protected areas where the use of fertilizers and pesticides is not allowed.
